Robotic Mediations – robotic hot-wire cutting formwork system

Robotic Mediations investigates the design and fabrication of complex concrete formwork systems with a focus on reducing material waste. Developed within the AA Istanbul Visiting School 2018, the project integrates computational design with robotic fabrication processes to explore how waste optimisation can act as a design driver rather than a constraint.

Using Robotic Hot-Wire Cutting (RHWC), digital and physical experiments inform one another, translating the geometric and material logic of fabrication directly into design decisions. The research is further developed through Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) spraying onto EPS formwork, which remains embedded within the concrete layer. The project demonstrates how advanced fabrication technologies can align geometric freedom with material efficiency.

Developed during Dr. Elif Erdine’s tenure as Programme Director (AA Istanbul Visiting School) at the Architectural Association.
